Today was a very hot day. My favorite way to make sure the animals stay cool and hydrated is to give them ice cold watermelon. I bought two watermelons today and everyone got a big wedge. The girls in the saloon coop surround their watermelon.
The Isbars devoured everything but the green rind.
It was so hot that the goat girls interrupted their nap to eat watermelon.
The emus passed on the watermelon, preferring to take bites out of each other’s necks instead. The girls are doing this to the boys!
Lukka and her babies got watermelon, Isi and the layer girls got a big slice, and even the little turkey poults and Icelandic chicks got a big chink. They ate every single ounce of it then took long naps.
It was so hot that the chickens were panting with their wings spread away from their bodies.
Tomorrow is slated to be hot, but thankfully not as hot as today. I have a watermelon chilling. Bring it on!

Don’t know how I ended up here but love your website….and your chickens. What is the temperment of the Isbars? Where are you located?? DB
Mary says
HI Dolores, glad you found us! The Isbars are pretty calm. My rooster isn’t aggressive but he keeps his distance. The girls don’t jump on my shoulder but they don’t freak when I go in the coop either. I can reach under them and take eggs out and they stay put. I really like them.
Come back soon!
