Emu boys, Stuart and Louis, will be two years old in March. The girls, Loca and Chica just turned one on January 1st, 2013. Emus generally begin mating between two and three years of age, with some starting as early as 18 months. Emu courtship consists of strutting and displaying the neck feathers by both the male and female. The female makes a drumming sound (“booming”) and the male makes a grunting sound (“growling”). Chica has been strutting and displaying her neck feathers for several weeks, which has Stuart and Louis confused. Simply put, she’s a tease. They have taken the bait and have begun pursuing her in an “I want you to be my girlfriend” kind of way. Loca has yet to show any interest in boys and often comes to the defense of her naughty sister Chica.
I mean really, who could resist Louis with his bedroom eyes.
And Stuart rockin’ the mullet.
Even though the girls are not interested yet, Chica keeps strutting and the boys still come calling. I caught a little video of the dating game yesterday. Stuart tries to win Chica’s affection and both boys end up being run off by Loca.
