Jack has been having problems with his feet. The vet recommended that he be confined to the round pen for rehabilitation. Jack’s problem may be chronic mild laminitis from consumption of rich pasture grass. She also recommended that Diana be confined to the round pen because she’s fat! The plan is to keep them confined during the day when the sugar content of the pasture grass is higher and let them out at night. In order to accomplish this, we needed to rid the round pen of the grass and install some arena sand for Jack’s feet. Our soil is very heavily clay based and conditions in the round pen have been quite disgusting since we went through the wettest March in history. We had 14 yards of arena sand brought in with four more coming tomorrow. The sand was dumped from a truck into three large piles and we have started shoveling it around the pen. Jack and Diana had not seen it as they spent the day in the lower pasture. I lured them up with carrots and they got the first glimpse of the round pen renovation. Diana immediately started running in circles as if being lunged. She came from a donkey breeder who kept the animals stalled and then worked them in round pens. Diana must have had a little flashback! Jack was more tentative being the scaredy cat that he is. Once he realized the sand was not going to swallow him up whole he too started running and bucking and climbing the big piles. Michael and I went down and shoveled sand while the donkeys played in it. Jack even helped move the sand around. I think they like the new digs.
Kathy says
FAT??? Diana is not fat! She’s “big boned,” and maybe a bit plump. Fat? No, no, no. I hope the Diva doesn’t suffer grumbling belly aches as she diets.
Sure hope Jack’s rehabilitation goes well and his feet improve.
Michael looks great in the video. Do tell….. what was he saying? I can’t read lips so well without my bifocals. Your camera is taking GREAT photos and videos, Mary! You must have figured out all those new features already!
