Yesterday was a weird day. I have had my eye on a little electric scooter I saw on Craigslist. I thought it would be perfect for me to move around on when tending to the animals. Sometimes my fatigue and difficulty breathing, coupled with my musculo-skeletal issues makes doing what I love too difficult. I addition to having my eye on the scooter, I saw a two story ferret cage for sale on Craigslist too. Now I have no need nor want for a ferret, but I really wanted that cage! It would be perfect for the chick brooders I planned to have in the screen room. We got home from my doctor’a appointment and I called the ferret cage lady to ask if we could come up and see it then next day. I piped up and said, “Ask if we can come now.” The lady agreed and off we went in the Hummer, $125.00 cash in hand to look at the two story ferret cage. It was located about 25 miles from our home, quite nearby the scooter I coveted. Michael suggested we call the scooter people and see if we could come by and take a look at it. They agreed. We bought the ferret cage and stuffed it into the back of the Hummer and off we went to see the scooter. Michael, who was adamant that I didn’t need the scooter, tried it out and immediately decided we should buy it and take it home last night! But the ferret cage was already stuffed into the back of the Hummer. Michael said we could tie the ferret cage to the top of the Hummer and shove the scooter into the back of the Hummer. We took off for the ATM to get cash for the scooter and to the auto supply store for tie-down straps. We returned and Michael pulled the ferret cage out of the back of the Hummer. The scooter guy, Eric, helped him hoist it on top of the Hummer. They broke the scooter down for transport, and after some grunting and groaning, coaxed it into the back of the Hummer. With trepidation on my part we headed for home, hoping to get here before dark to put the animals away. I was planning to get a photo of our Clampett-mobile but by the time I hung up my coat and hat, Michael had the ferret cage down from the roof of the car. He then muscled the scooter out of the back of the Hummer, parked it outside the dining room, on the deck, next to his motorcycle (that will be the subject of another post). Here’s the Hummer, minus the ferret cage on top.
Here is the ferret cage, in the sunroom where it will serve as a 2 story brooder for baby chicks that will be sold here.
Lastly here is the sweet little Cricket scooter that I have watched for so long on Craigslist. It is a 2008 model that someone bought and never used. It still has the plastic on the seat and back. I am so happy to have it and think it will help me live my dream as a hobby rancher.
My first venture out on the scooter was scary. I have never ridden a motorcycle and the handlebars that you twist towards you threw me for a loop. I got my confidence by the time I got down to the gate. Unfortunately, I almost lost the emus out the gate because it took me so long to maneuver the scooter through the small opening I allowed myself. That crisis averted I continued on my rounds. In my cargo container I had a coal bucket full of fireplace ash. I poured the ash in all the chicken dust bath holes. It really helps keep creepy crawlies off the birds. Also in my cargo container are six big carrots I plan to feed to Jack and Diane over the fence. I rode the Cricket scooter down to the back of the property. Jack and Diane panic and ran for their lives. When I get off the scooter to try to entice them with carrots, I saw that I no longer had any carrots. A glance back up the hill confirmed that Stuart and Louis had followed me down, taking the carrots out of the back of the scooter and dropping them on the ground. I had to retrace my steps, getting off the scooter every few feet to retrieve a carrot. Eventually I walked far enough away from the scooter that Jack and Diane felt safe and they came to the fence-line for their carrots. I was enjoying the moment when suddenly the sky opened up and a substance resembling a cross between hail and snow began to blow in my face. Not wanting to subject my scooter to the elements, I rode back to the house, followed by chicken, goats and emus where I covered my scooter with an old mattress pad. Tomorrow I have a doctor’s appointment to evaluate the damage to my knee from the pig incident followed two hours later by a steroid injection into my spinal column. I probably won’t get to enjoy either of my treasures tomorrow but it will give me something to think about while the procedures are being done. I have great hope that the injection will work and I will be ready to ride soon!
