Honey Lake Saturday Races

May 3, 2009

Buddy got up this morning saying that he was going to win the 8-15 Sport Class today. He has never finished first in the sport race. But, before he could get to that, he had the 70 cc Modified Race. Buddy had dropped to third place overall in this class and needed a first or second place finish to move up.

He didn’t get off to a good start and was running third in the first lap. In the lead was #6 Travis Beckman with #38 Jacob Gillespie in second. These are the two kids he needed to beat to move in the overall points.

He got around Jacob and was closing the gap on Travis.

Buddy was in a good position to overtake Travis when he rounded a turn too fast and skidded off the course.

He got back on the track but lost valuable time that he would have to make up if he was going to pass Travis.

For the remainder of the race he stayed on Travis.

At the end, they were this close but Travis crossed the finish line ahead of Buddy.

He had to settle for second place in the race and a move up to second place in the overall points standings.
Here he is accepting his second place trophy.
Then it was time for the Sport Class. This race is for kids 8 to 15 years old riding 90 cc ATV’s. Buddy is nine and rides a 70 cc quad. He has never placed first in this race so we all thought he was crazy all day for saying he was going to win. He started the forty minute Sport Race in the back of the pack in seventh place.
He had a lot of ground to make up if he was even going to make podium in this race. Well, he raced his little heart out and one by one he passed all the kids ahead of him to get into second place behind Travis again.
On the second to the last lap he made a move on the outside of a split lap. One side is shorter and safer and is called the “chicken line.” Travis chose the chicken line and Buddy took the outside, longer lane.
Look at the determination in his eyes as he rounds the turn. He “pinned it,” according to him, and got ahead of Travis to take first place! He held onto the lead and crossed the finish line ahead of 15 year olds on 90 cc quads. We went wild, to say the least! Here he is after the race with his very proud Dad.
He said he was going to do it and he did it! Awards ceremony is tomorrow and I’ll be back with pics.

Update:

I did better than pics. Here’s a short video of Buddy’s come-from-behind pass to win the Sport Race! Travis is #6 on the black quad wearing yellow, Buddy is #16 on the blue quad wearing red. Enjoy!
