I spent the day clearing my raised beds of leftover stuff from my winter garden. I had a healthy amount of moss growing and I decided to remove it before tilling the soil. I lost a good bit of soil in the process so I had to add planter mix to fill the beds. I also added my favorite soil amendment, organic chicken manure. I chose to apply it tonight while my next door neighbor was barbecuing. I figured I’d pay them back for the loud music. The chicken manure odor mixed with the smell of the bat guano in the planter mix was quite a treat! Tonight my beds are ready for planting, which I hope to do in the morning.
For my cyber friends on the other side of the country, it is supposed to be in the 90’s next week. The local paper says to wait another week but I am moving ahead since I didn’t read that until after I bought my plants.
I am using the Square Foot Gardening principles again since it worked well for my Fall/Winter garden. You really can grow a lot of stuff in a small space. At least I hope so because this is what I bought:
Tomatoes, onions, potatoes, squash, melons, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, dill, chives, basil, cilantro, sage, parsley, pumpkins, carrots, peas, and beans. Oh, and marigolds of course. I have 120 “squares” in my raised beds so I should be ok. I just have to work out what to plant where. I need to remember to put the tall things in the middle and the shorter stuff to the outsides. I am excited to get planting!
Our little orchard is progressing nicely. We have fruit on all the trees but the citrus, which are just starting to bloom.
And my BIG surprise today? I found this growing in my garden.
An artichoke! My first one. I love dirt.

The orchard is looking nice………….oh to be in a warm spot to have citrus!! I really should investigate growing one inside, I know they have miniatures……….
Did you plant the artichoke? or did it just come up?
You Know Who says
Your orchard looks cute. Good Luck on your garden.

I was reading this to the girls and the first thing out of Emily when we got to the pic of the counter with all the plants is "Nana cant shop alone" Hasnt this come up before? I love the payback to the neighbor. I bet those kids wont be hanging out the windows for the next few days. You should keep a little of that on hand for emergancy use when the kids next door are acting up again. Mandy and Emily want to help plant. I will have them call in the morning and see if you need any help. You know how much Mandy love to plant things. OK she says its not the planting its the playing in the dirt that makes it so much fun. Is that your opinion also Mom? If only she understood what you just said was in that dirt.
