Thelma and Louise have thoroughly trashed our bathroom. Their chick down is being replaced with big girl feathers and that means little feathers everywhere. They cannot eat without throwing chick starter out into the tub and floor. They love tearing up the puppy pads in their cage and causing a fine layer of white dust everywhere. Don’t even get me started on the wood shavings they use as bedding. So, today was the day to start transitioning them out of the house. I moved their cage outside and let them spend the morning and early afternoon on top of the barbecue grill ( a subtle hint that they better shape up.)
Everything was going well until I put a sprig of parsley in the cage, causing a total freakout.
Eventually they settled down and decided that parsley doesn’t kill baby chicks on contact.
Thelma kept a close watch on the temperature at first making sure they stayed at a balmy 86 degrees. She let her guard down in the afternoon and we almost had a catastrophe.
We left the house for a couple of hours to run errands. When we got home the sun was shining, the heat lamp was on and the temp in the cage was 107.9 degrees! OMG, I almost cooked my chicks! We got them out of the cage and they cooled down quickly. Close call!
So we decided to introduce Thelma and Louise to the rest of the barnyard inhabitants. The boys approached with caution at first.
Donovan considered starting a fight, as usual. “You want a piece of me?” He decided to wait until they get bigger.
Banning wondered if I had peanuts or raisins in my pocket?
Aidan wondered if they really do taste like chicken?
Their interest in baby chicks over, the goats quickly moved on to other things. Like trying to help Donovan get out of the oak tree.
So it was time to introduce Thelma and Louise to the rest of the flock. We started out by putting their cage in the chicken yard.
More interest here.
We removed them from the safety of the cage with apprehension. It was Oprah and Gayle vs. Thelma and Louise.
Gayle got her panties in a bunch for a moment.
She pecked at Thelma, who got away quickly.
Soon all the big girls lost interest and moved on, leaving the chicks to explore the chicken yard undisturbed.
They got to try out the big girl waterer.
And play chicken pot pie.
Then it was time to move into their new night time digs, out of the bathroom, into the garage.
Goodnight Thelma and Louise! Sorry we almost barbecued you. Mayhem averted again.
