We had another wild weather day today. The wind was fierce this morning when the automatic chicken door opened at dawn but they all piled out into the storm. Michael said (yes he was awake at 6:00 a.m.) “We might find one of those chickens in Kansas.”
I had read online that a good way to entertain chickens when the weather is bad, is to hang a cabbage from a string and let them pick at it. So I gave it a try. I pulled a purple cabbage up from the garden, root and all, and twisted a wire around the stem. I hung it from the roof in the covered area of the chicken run. Lucy, Ethel and Oprah were amused by it but the others left as soon as they realized I wasn’t bringing good snacks, like leftover bread and pizza crust. They really have nothing to complain about. I cooked them oatmeal for breakfast. Maybe tomorrow, if the wind doesn’t blow them away.

Mary, that is too funny!! Are all the chickens still at home, no Kansas bound chicks? So this automatic door opener, how does that work?
