In the Northern Hemisphere winter officially ended at 1:14 a.m. ET on Tuesday, March 20, 2012–the vernal equinox, or spring equinox–making today the first day of spring. Who forgot to tell our weatherman. It wasn’t a bad day, just a bit chilly and still soaked by the week long deluge that finally let up this morning. We were promised snow down to 1200 feet in elevation this week. Didn’t happen. The arrival of spring probably officially ends my chance of seeing snow at the Buck ‘n Run Ranch, two years in a row. But still I enjoyed the day as did the animals, who have been drenched like drowned rats for over a week, living in muddy, sloppy shelters. Today the sun shone and they ran and played and basked in the sun. I enjoyed seeing them in joy and delight but seeing them walking the path in the snow was what I wanted. Maybe next year. I shall not mention it again until then.
The chickens enjoyed a day of not standing in mud.
Michael mowed the grass and the pastures showed their appreciation of the rain. The green is amazing!
Bob and Bob, our friends from Canada spent the day laying in the sun and swimming in the pond.
Best part of the first day of Spring? Michael could stop chasing leaks and floods long enough to build the step in the new screen room. I designed it and bought the materials and Michael put it together for me. It will make entering exiting the sunroom much safer. I’ll plant the pots when I find the mortar bit to drill drain holes. Why do they make planters without drain holes? As soon as I finish decorating the sunroom I’ll post new pictures. I am thoroughly enjoying it everyday. It is a wonderful chicken room, ground zero for my chicken empire which I am building one egg at a time!
The Other Mary says
Mary, These pictures of Buck n Run are so different from the original ones I saw. Then, brown and lifeless, now, green and vibrant with lots of life! You’ve done wonders in such a short time!
