I came downstairs at 5:50 this morning and as I was turning on the lights I heard a sound like a glass breaking. I looked in the incubator and saw this:
Egg “B” had pipped! I spent the next seven hours in front of the incubator talking, tapping and whistling to the baby emu for encouragement. Finally, fifty-one days of worry and excitement yielded this:
Meet Baby “B,”, the chick formerly known as Egg “B.” The hatch was videotaped and as soon as I condense it down to a reasonable size I will post it. The shell membrane is, as we speak, on it’s way to the DNA lab for gender analysis. Results are expected Thursday!
In related news, I received the DNA results back today on the chicks I purchased locally.
Drumroll please…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
They are both girls! It was an exciting day at the Buck ‘n Run Ranch today. Please check back soon for the video! In the meantime here are the girls meeting Baby “B” for the first time. They look HUGE!
Here is my DNA report from Zoogen The first two are Stuart and Louis ( formerly known as Mary Catherine). The next two females were birds I tested from a seller and decided not to buy. The next two Are Stuart and Louis again. Michael kept thinking the first results were wrong and decided that we should re-test them. The last two are the baby girls I just bought! On Thursday they should be adding the results for the one that hatched today. I tested two other birds but the results aren’t on here becuase the seller decided to keep them once she found out they were girls. The people at Zoogen thought that was a rotten thing to do and refunded my money and cancelled the tests. So $260.00 in DNA testing later, I have my girls! Did I mention that I am done?

Thanks Kathy! It was so cool to watch. The Hovabator worked great as a hatcher. I was even able to maintain the humidity at 35%. I guess since the other two eggs were not fertile, I had a 100% hatch rate! WooHoo! See ya on BYC. I hope!
