I realize that I go on and on about how much I enjoy mornings but you’ll have to bear with me again. In a few days I expect it will get colder and I might just enjoy my mornings a bit less. But, for now, it is still the best time of day. Why is that? Well, coffee for starters. That right there makes mornings better than evenings. Then there is the sunrise and the beautiful light it casts over the land. Yesterday and today the morning light has been spectacular. The other good thing about mornings at the Buck ‘n Run Ranch are the animals. They are at their best after a good night’s sleep. The majority of the bucking, running, head-butting, crowing, choking, fainting and hugging happens just after the sun comes up. Of course everyone needs something to eat first but after that, look out!
Yesterday I wanted to get a better view of the valley with my camera so I decided to walk to the back of the property. I gathered my entourage of goats, emus and chickens and we headed off, away from the house which was still in darkness towards the valley, bathed in sunlight. The chickens went only as far as the rock outcroppings but the goats and emus were ready to go the distance, since we only have five acres. The donkeys are otherwise engaged at that hour, eating oats, so it was just the seven of us. Stuart likes to run ahead, while Louis likes to follow behind me, grabbing the soles of my shoes as I walk. Louise (aka Satan) leads the goat pack with Laverne and Shirley right behind. Thelma hangs back with me because the mean girls like to T-bone her and make her faint, then hit her again when she gets up. She knows I won’t hit her again when she gets up. Just kidding. Everybody is happy and it shows. The goats run and twist and jump while the emus break out into impromptu dances with each other. Thelma and I are content to watch the others make fools of themselves, lest either of us gets excited and faints. We had to stop and cavort around on the top of the septic tank on our way to the back fence. Apparently we like the sounds our hooves make as we dance on the cement. Eventually we made it to the fence line where the crew filled up on leaves while I took pictures. We visited awhile with the llamas next door then came back the long way next to the dirt road. We stopped to play king of the mountain a couple of times eventually ending up back home which oddly, was still in the dark. Here are some of the reasons why mornings are the best.
