Don’t let this cute face fool you.
Louis has been a bad boy for two days. To re-cap:
The white arrow in the next picture indicates our property line. Behind us is where Kay and Shannon live with their llamas. See it way back in the back of the picture? I took the picture standing on our deck.
Here is another view. Please ignore the donkeys and the ugly satellite dish. Thank you. Anyway, the red arrow on the top right indicates where Louis decided to go on an unscheduled visit yesterday. We need better fencing.
But I digress. We had a knock on the door yesterday and our neighbor was there to tell us they had an emu that they didn’t have that morning. We rushed up and escorted our boy home, apologetic and promising it won’t happen again. We made a hasty trip to Home Depot for supplies to shore up a really bad fence patch job.
He was a good boy all day today, doing what emus do, checking out the new umbrella,
watching over the goats,
and relaxing in the sun.
Then the mother of all emu misadventures occurred.
A nice young couple came by to drop off my half of a roll of fencing we split. We had never met, it was just a Craigslist find. Before they left I invited them to see the animals. We stayed in the yard, safely behind the fence. Louis and Stuart came up to meet them and all was going well until it happened. Louis suddenly leaned over the fence, and in the blink of an eye, snatched the earring right out of the ladies ear! My life flashed before my eyes. Just before he swallowed it, Michael grabbed him by the neck and choked him until he spit it out. It was a turquoise and silver earring with a fish hook back, almost identical to these.
Thank goodness it had the type of backing it did and she was not injured. The wire was bent but she straightened it out and put the earring back in. I was sooooo much more apologetic for his behavior today than yesterday. I learned a valuable lesson and won’t let visitors get that close. Emus love jewelry. They just can’t help it.
Hopefully his little period of naughty behavior is done and he will be his old sweet self tomorrow!

Sorry Brenda, you will need to pick him up. We can't deliver because he gets car sick. 🙂
Thanks for the kind words about my website. I am trying to bump my readership back up since scrapping the old site. It's a long process, one reader at a time.
Santa Rosa is such a nice place. Lots of wineries there now I think. Thanks again for visiting!

That would be great Mary, will you deliver him to Central Texas???? I am loving your site. Don't remember now if I got here from PW or CITR, but nonetheless, I am enjoying your farming adventures. I did live in Cloverdale in 1972, worked in Santa Rosa!!! Love Northern California!!!
