It was hot today. In fact it was the first day to top 90 degrees. Around midday, the place was deserted, not an animal in sight. Fearing a band of chicken, goat, and emu rustlers were working the area, I went in search of my animals.
I found a group of hens holed up in the emu pen, wings flared and beaks open.
This is the way it’s done. Get those wings away from the body as much as you can.
I found Isi and his girls lined up in the meager midday shade from the barn.
The layers and juveniles took advantage of the shade provided by our ugly vinyl trellis panels.
The remaining birds chose to hang out under the picnic table or in the coop.
Chickens accounted for, I went in search of Thelma and Louise. Sadly J.D. went to his new home in Granite Bay yesterday. I hear he is doing well. I found the girls under the trailer.
Jack was easy to find. He is in a one week time-out in the round pen for training.
Diana found shade under a little tree.
I sprayed them both down with the hose. They hate me now.
The donkeys were wet and mad but safe from the heat, so I moved on in search of the emus.
They may have the smallest brains of the group but they found the best way to stay cool. Stuart and M.C. spent the better part of the day in these plastic bins full of water. Click the arrow to play video of Stuart.
So that is how you beat the heat at the Buck ‘N Run Ranch!

He has trouble getting out of one…. steps one foot in the other…. then walks around both if them…. just to lay in the same one he started out in?? xD That's great!!
