One of the Icelandic hens is working overtime! While collecting eggs yesterday I found this in the Icelandic coop.
While the picture might not tell the whole story the numbers do. A large egg weighs 2.0 ounces. A jumbo egg weighs 2.5 ounces. This egg weighs 3.2 ounces! There isn’t even a category for that in chicken eggs! For comparison, here is the egg alongside a large egg weighing exactly 2.0 ounces, which I have found is about average for my adult layers.
I am collecting hatching eggs for a friend but I would not send this egg in case it was a double or triple yolker. Those have only hatched on very rare occasions and have given more grief than happiness. So it was destined to be cracked and eaten. It turned out to just be a great big egg with one great big yolk! Here are both eggs, side by side again.
Obviously I have one hen that deserves a day off. Since I do not know who laid this egg, I am giving all the hens the day off!
Now, I have to go eat breakfast.
