Ebony and Ivory

July 22, 2014

Yesterday two Icelandic chicks hatched. One is black and the other white. Icelandics chickens are a landrace fowl and they can have very different colors of feathers and legs. Some are crested, others are not.

Please forgive the blurry picture. They were totally non-cooperative for picture-taking today.

The dark chick hatched first and it had bilaterally splayed legs, meaning both legs went out sideways and the chick couldn’t stand up. I put hobbles on its legs as soon as I saw that it had splay. I took the hobble off this morning and the chick looks just fine, running all over the place. I will keep a close watch on it and put the hobble back on if needed.

The little white chick hatched late last night and is not completely fluffed up. That didn’t stop it from escaping tonight when I was taking pictures. It gave me a run for my money all over the basement! I finally cornered it and got it back in the brooder. Tomorrow they will move outside to the big brooder with the other chicks.
