Today, March 19th, is National Poultry Day. I have found very little information on how it came to be, but most people celebrate by eating a chicken dinner. We do it a little differently here at the Egg Farm. We celebrated by serving our chickens pizza for lunch. It wasn’t planned but the result of a recipe malfunction. I made pizza dough this morning and forgot to add the salt. It was horrible for humans but delicious for chickens, goats, emus and donkeys. I crumbled up a pizza dough with some stale bread and carrots for the donkeys and made my rounds. I used to have a big red bowl that I served treats from. It met with an unfortunate accident so I replaced it will a big turquoise bowl Everyone comes running when they see “the bowl.”
First up was Stuart who likes to eat right out of the bowl. He has no problem spitting out things he doesn’t like but today he liked the pizza.
Stuart has worn the feathers off his chest from doing who-knows-what.
Laverne and Shirley were down for naps but they came out of their dogloos for pizza.
Shirley politely waited her turn.
Laverne Likes to be hand fed so I always save some for her and she follows me to the gate. She jumps up with her hooves in the gate and eats out of my hand.
Louis was next. He was waiting impatiently on the other side of the fence.
He is, quite honestly, the sweetest creature on earth.
Chica is afraid that pizza will go straight to her thighs so she abstained.
Jack and Diane came to the fence for carrots and a slice of stale bread. They were much too busy to linger with the pasture full of fresh grass.
I stopped to throw a scrap to a little freeloader enjoying a goat chow lunch.
Finally the honoree’s of National Poultry Day got their treats. Coop 5 is empty so I started with the Black Copper Marans in Coop 4. The fake rocks have cut-outs on both sides. We used them for hiding places from hawks at our last place. The runs are covered here but they still use them.
Then on to Coop 3 with all my assorted layers. These girls are so happy. We moved the rooster so they have the coop and run to themselves.
One of the Olive Eggers is working on her tan.
Coop 2 now houses Icelandic chickens Isi, Lukka, and their offspring.
Coop 1 is home to another Icelandic flock.
The second batch of pizza dough, with salt, was the base for a glorious pepperoni pizza for me and Michael. We didn’t share this one!
Happy Poultry Day from the Egg Farm. We hope you enjoyed an egg or gave a chicken a hug.
