If you haven’t heard, California is in a drought and we have not had rain in 50 days, making this the driest year in recorded history. I realize this is not of much concern to those of you struggling with blizzards, flooding and the polar vortex while we bask in 74 degree sunshine. The ramifications of the drought for those of us in California is daunting. So when rain was forecast for today, I set aside my selfish enjoyment of the sunshine and prepared for it. I thought it was hilarious this morning when the local news, lately all about the devastating drought, was all abuzz about how locals were coping with the gloomy weather. We do want our cake and to eat it too!
Tucker, our beloved little dog was demoted yesterday from his position of farm dog to watch dog. I took away his farm dog title because he no longer accompanies me on the pre-dawn animal feedings. Instead he gets in bed with Michael and sleeps for a couple of extra hours, leaving me to do the chores alone. I let him have the watchdog title because he can recognize the sounds of the UPS, Fed-Ex, and mail trucks from a mile away. I guess he was still pouting today. He spent the morning curled up on the sofa on a pile of blankets, sleeping. Until I came along with my camera. The flash woke him up, God forbid.
He stuck his tongue out at me,
yawned,
and went back to sleep for a couple more hours.
Meanwhile life on the farm moved along.
A new Isbar chick hatched.
An odd eggs was laid. (more about that tomorrow)
Turkeys crossed the road for the same reason chickens do.
And our resident Cooper’s hawks hung out, hoping for a free chicken dinner.
I have to give it to the hawks for dealing with the rain better than the rest of us, especially Tucker. But, we got some much needed rain to our region and for that I am thankful.
