Where there’s smoke…

July 27, 2013

there’s turkeys.

I got a good scare today. I was in the kitchen when I saw a huge cloud of smoke blow by the window. California is tinder dry right now and wildfires are always a concern. I hurried to my office for a better look out the French doors. I found our outside burn area, which hasn’t been used since December, engulfed in smoke. I couldn’t imagine how it could be on fire without any vegetation. When the “smoke” cleared I got the answer.

Two families of turkeys, with babies, were dust bathing in the ash. Chickens and turkeys dust-bathe to clean themselves and to keep bugs away. I had heard that ash is a very popular medium for dust bathing. Now I know that to be true.

Here’s a video of the wildfire in my yard.
