I have a real issue with blue as an interior color. If you like it, that’s fine. I just have a personal issue with it. Maybe it is because I lived with it for many years and worked around it for many more years. I am also a rabid fan of HGTV and it seems as if blue is over used there as well. The chronic illness I live with requires me to sleep with oxygen at night so I sleep alone now. I haven’t done much with decorating my room since we moved here. I just moved the furniture in and didn’t think much about it. However, new back issues have caused me to need to go back to my adjustable bed which is a twin bed. Aha, an excuse to decorate! I set about feathering my nest.
I remembered reading an article in the paper about the resurgence of shabby chic. Realizing I have never decorated in shabby chic, I decided to go that route. With the room being mine, I wouldn’t have to suffer the comments about it being girlie. Michael can have his tropically inspired man room and I can have my shabby chic woman room. Michael dragged beds from one room to another until I had my adjustable twin bed back and the grandkids room had my queen bed.
I remembered how much I enjoyed the teal wall I painted in our bedroom a few years ago and decided to go that route. For the record, Michael hated it. I found Rachel Ashwell’s Simply Shabby Chic bedding collection at Target. I chose a neutral comforter set with a color I shall refer to as turquoise, not blue.
The headboard and night stands were a set and moved into the kid’s guestroom so I found this little white distressed table to use for storage and as a night stand. It makes the room more to scale since it is larger than a night stand. I have room for all the essentials, a lamp, a telephone, and a rooster!
I hung sheer white curtains on my big window and in the window seat alcove. I stole artwork from other rooms and replaced it with the stuff that was in my room before. I painted one wall a dove grey color and the alcove a turquoise called misty morn.
I traded my orange chair for this slouchy beige chair and ottoman from the master bedroom and created a reading area. Michael uses it to watch television with me at night before I go to sleep and he goes back to his flight simulator program.
Eighteen years ago I bought this antique lingerie chest and I use it as a dresser and television stand in my room. I just love it. I swapped out the original hardware for something more modern a few years ago but keep the original hardware safely tucked in the bottom drawer.
This is the original hardware.
The chest has a really cool feature. The panel on the right side can be locked keeping the drawers from opening.
The best part of my new room is that during the day it is bathed in sunshine and at night it is warm and cozy.

The room looks great Mom. You always do such a great job when you decorate. Watch out Martha Stewart.
