Lilacs, oh my goodness

August 21, 2013

I have always loved lilacs but have never grown them. I always thought of them as an east coast plant, adorning the estates around Martha’s Vineyard. Ina Garten has lilacs. Martha Stewart has lilacs. Mary O’Brien? Not so much.

That was before we moved to this old farmhouse. At the front of the house we have two huge lilac bushes which have just come into bloom. As if the flowers weren’t pretty enough, the smell is divine.

The lilacs are located just in front of the wrap-around porch which makes enjoying them quite easy.

One of the joys of buying an old house is seeing what pops up in the spring. I had a beautiful hyacinth appear in the rose garden. Michael hit it with the weed whacker. 🙁 The greenery of California poppies are all over. Well, the ones that escaped the weed whacker are still here. I am so anxious to see the bright orange poppies bloom.

There is a small rose garden near the front door. It appears as if three have survived. I can’t wait to see the colors.

Thanks Kathy. I wish you could smell the lilacs. They are wonderful. I am so lucky to be here and have good friends like you.
